5 Key Considerations when Choosing Cabinets

When it comes to choosing the perfect cabinets Norelco Cabinets with their 50 years of experience in the industry is the perfect business to ask.

We interviewed one of Norelco’s Sales & Design Consultants, Jen Mellon, to hear about her experience and to learn about a few key points to be cautious of when choosing your cabinets.

Here are Jen’s Top 5 Tips:
1. Functionality vs. Looks

When it comes to designing your kitchen cabinets and layout, for example, make sure you consider who will be using the space and how it will be used the most. Do you cook a lot at home? If yes, think through your cooking process and where you’d like everything to go for a seamless meal prepping and cooking process. Do you have children that need easy access to some cabinets or ensure it’s a safe space for them as well? How often do you usually clean and is it important to you to have cabinets that don’t show dirt as much? This might define if you work with glass or no/minimal glass in your cabinet doors. All these questions are important to ask yourself before choosing cabinets or curating a look.

2. Contrast Your Floor

Consider your floor choice when you decide on cabinet colours. The colour choice of your cabinets and their handles will give you the chance to set accents and to create contrast to your floor. If you have very light floors you might consider choosing your lower cabinets to be more rich in colour or to be darker.

3. Repetition to Guide the Eye

We’re talking about the repetition of colour and materials in order to create a pleasing aesthetic. Start by looking at your kitchen layout so you can determine what kind of cabinets and shelves to get in order to maximize the space to your needs – cabinets vs floating shelves for example. While repetition is important to guide the eye, be careful to not overdo one colour. Jen shares with us that a general design principle is a 1/3 – 2/3 split of two different colors as it is naturally pleasing for the eye.

4. White is Timeless

White and its many shades are timeless. If you’re concerned that certain colours and looks will go out of style or feel too much after a while, the colour white is always a safe choice to incorporate in your cabinets. And while safe might sound boring, rest assured that this is not the case as you can easily combine it with other tones and materials like rich and warm wood tones for example. White offers a minimal and bright design, reflects light and has an overall calming quality.

5. Curate Looks You Like

Thanks to the many social media platforms we have nowadays it’s easy to get a glimpse of other people’s homes or design projects. Jen suggests using these platforms to get inspired and to figure out what you like and don’t like. Use these tools to curate a look you hope to create and get a better feel for it. As you start figuring out what really works in and for your space Jen emphasizes that there also needs to be some letting go and the ability to be open to change plans. This will ultimately lead to the perfect design curated for your space and taste.
