People are always talking about the Okanagan Lifestyle, but what does it really mean?
The Okanagan lifestyle is something that’s talked about all the time in relation to Kelowna and the surrounding valley. From a wealth of amenities to picturesque views and locales, there’s no end to what the Okanagan lifestyle has to offer, particular for those not used to it and who might be moving here from outside the interior.
With that in mind, we wanted to briefly explore just what the Okanagan lifestyle actually means and how you can take full advantage of it.
1) Move Here
We know we’re asking a lot here, but if you want to take full advantage of what the Okanagan has to offer, you have to be here. It’s not just limited to summer (though summer is epic), there’s a whole bevy of seasons to take advantage of throughout the year, and they’re better appreciated from the comfort of your own home (contact the McKinley Beach sales office for details – discover@mckinleybeach.com)
2) Explore
This is a big one. The Valley runs approximately 200 kilometers from end to end, starting down by the US border and heading north all the way to Salmon Arm. Heading from the south to the north, you’ll discover quite a shift in geography and climate, with hot desert-like areas in the south, and green, lush forests in the north. Several lakes run throughout the valley, all with unique features. For example, due to shifting lime deposits when the snow melts, Kalamalka lake always turns a turquoise blue in the summer months. From hiking trails, to rivers, lakes, forests, deserts, natural park lands, and more, there’s no end to the exploration possibilities.
3) Wine Country
Arguably, it’s actually ‘Fruit Country’, but as grapes are a fruit, we’ll let it slide. The entire valley plays hosts to orchards and vineyards including over 200 wineries, many of them award-winning. From Bottleneck Drive in Summerland to the heights of Mission Hill’s bell tower in West Kelowna, and beyond, this is a true grape-filled paradise for wine lovers.
4) Amenities for Days
The Okanagan Lake alone offers a wealth of water based amenities, from paragliding, boating, and swimming, to kite boarding, wakeboarding, and stand-up paddle boarding. There are hiking trails throughout the valley, camp and RV sites, smaller lakes to play in, wineries, breweries, artisanal food creators, boutique shopping, eclectic restaurants, art galleries, and cultural experiences aplenty. No matter your interest whether it be activity, food, or culture-based, there are plenty of amenities to meet everyone’s tastes.
5) It’s a State of Mind
Most of all the Okanagan lifestyle comes with a distinct state of mind for the people that live here and visit on a regular basis. The Okanagan isn’t just a tourist destination, it’s a sense of belonging to a large community spanning several towns and cities. Living an Okanagan lifestyle means embracing a sense of adventure and exploration, taking life in your stride while living that life in a beautiful location, ripe with natural amenities, and cultural experiences. Also, the summers are epic (did we mention that already?)
